Alexei Tolstoy believed that he had never written any other play as easily and cheerfully as “Kasatka”. The history of its stage productions is bright, although not numerous. It was staged immediately after writing, in 1917, than in the 1920s, also in the postwar years and in the late 1950s, and everywhere the performances were a great success. "This is the one real comedy, lively and full of action, which the Russian theater has been expected for a long time. Here, there is no need to look here for deep thoughts, high aspirations, or major issues. Tolstoy wrote a comedy with "living, authentic people”. Researchers of A. T. Tolstoy’s works considered "Kasatka" to be one of the most artistically perfect comedies that the writer created before the October Revolution.
The play features a happy ending, and the whole plot seems to be devoted to an amusing family incidents. But it was written at a difficult and tragic time – in 1916, just before the Revolution. At that time, the writer sought to find spiritual support in the natural basis of a human being, kindness, tolerance, compassion and love. The story begins in a very sad way in St. Petersburg, when Prince Belsky loses his last stash of money, but it ends happily for every character.
Prince Belsky loses all his money at cards. Now he has debts everywhere: – he must pay for the hotel he stays at, the restaurants he visits – and he doesn’t know where to find the money. He has a girlfriend whom he promises to marry if the situation improves.
And so, a series of events, including a canceled wedding, and an escape from home, leads us to everyone’s happiness. At the end of the play, two loving couples will find happiness, despite all the difficulties that they have to overcome.
